The Nico Cardoza Memorial Park Project
Marshall Rullman, a professional landscape architect
and friend of the Cardozas presented the plans below at the first organizational
meeting for the Nico Cardoza Memorial Project.
While these drawings are
not the "exact" project that we'll likely build in honor
of Nico, they do indicate the scope and probable concepts that we'll
incorporate.
It was partly due to Marshall's designs that we decided to aim higher
for this project. We've formed Fund Raising and Project Design and
Development Committees and have increased our financial goal to $125,000.
This project is estimated to be 75 feet across. The ground covering
is a colored rubberized coating similar to what you find on running
tracks and many playgrounds.
At the center is a boat mock-up stranded on a desert isle, with a palm sculpture
for added shade. Circling the island are sections of a Sea Monster designed
to be a climbing object with the potential for tunnels, natural lighting
effects,
and dazzling skin textures/colors. The last ring, in the wave front are spring "wobbly" seats
with ocean motifs (surf boards, Orcas, etc) interspersed with benches for folks
in need of a break.
Park Commission Endorses Project
On 2-27-06 the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission approved three motions
related to the Nico Project. They approved the conceptual design based on Marshall
Rullmans drawings. They approved building that project at Caper Acres. And finally,
they endorsed the entire effort, which opens the door for more effective fundraising
efforts.
